Sneaker of the Week: 12/16/09

This week’s Sneaker of the Week is the Nike Air 3, formally the KG Air 3.  Although KG no longer rocks with nike these shoes are still a classic.  I was able to pick these shoes up for the mere price of $40!  I am hoping to pick up the white pair in the near future!  You can still pick up a pair of these at, Footlocker, Footaction, Sneakerhead, and Pickyourshoes!

Air Jordan Retro 11: Every sneakerheads dream!

Sneaker of the Week is back! and it is back in a big way.  This week’s sneaker is the best Jordan sneaker of ALL TIME!  The Black/Red Air Jordan Retro 11.  This sneaker released yesterday 12/20/08.  They were released in a box set along with the Air Jordan Retro 12 with a retail price of $310.  This release was one of the most anticipated releases of all time.  Jordan heads were camping outside of stores and waiting in long lines all across the country to get them a pair.  Stores were selling out within minutes.  So did I camp out through the night and drop $300? NOPE! no camping out, no lines for me!  Best of all, I only paid $155 for the package! Even though I will continue to collect, I feel as though my collection is complete as I now own my DREAM JORDANS! I have been trying to get a pair of these ever since I started collecting sneakers and now I have them! THANK YOU JORDAN!!

For my final short review essay I am wanted to talk about how choosing the right spokesperson or endorser can work wonders for a company.  When it comes to the sneaker industry, Nike is at the head of the line.  Nike is now the leader in athletic shoes, in particular basketball sneakers.  Back in 1984 Nike wasn’t even in the discussion when it came to basketball shoes.  The best way to sell basketball sneakers is to put a top basketball player in them.  With the excitement of the high flying, clutch shot making Michael Jordan on the rise, Nike seen potential in him.  With its future on the line Nike chose Michael Jordan to be its spokesperson.  Nike played on Jordan’s high flying abilities and gave him his own shoe called, “Air Jordan’s”.  Jordan would proceed to skyrocket through the league his rookie year and gain even more popularity.  The first shoe in the line was the Air Jordan 1.  These shoes challenged the status quo as they were not all white and boring.  They were dark, bold and exciting.  These shoes are known for being the only shoes to be banned from the league.  This didn’t stop Mike from wearing them.  Each year of Jordan’s career there was a new shoe made in the line.  Each year Jordan would raise his game, and so would the sneakers.  As Jordan went so did the sneakers.  There are now 23 shoes in the Jordan signature line.  Nike was able to use a media and advertising method to take their brand to new heights.  After the success of Nike, many other brands have used athletes to promote their shoes.  Although other brands have had success, none have reached the level Nike has with Jordan.  With the growth of the Jordan line, Nike gave Jordan his own brand. 


The Jordan Brand now is its own entity but is still owned by Nike.  The Jordan Brand has its own innovative and interactive website, unique commercials and product.  Nike almost single handedly saved to footwear industry.  Nike new media approach to generate sales is a great success story.

 SLAM! Currently one of my favorite magazines is SLAM magazine.  Slam magazine successfully blends basketball with the popular hip hop culture.  Slam magazine was first released in 1994.  For the next 15 years it has been one of the leading magazines in both the sports and hip hop cultures.  They release 9 issues of the magazine a year and have released a total of 119 issues.  The magazine has also branched out and has a website called SLAM online.  The website features current basketball news as well as articles from the magazine.  The founder of the magazine is Dennis Page and the editor is Cory Johnson.  The first magazine featured then Charlotte Hornets all star Larry Johnson on the cover.  At the time Larry Johnson was very popular, due in part to his comedic “grandmamma” roles.  This was a role he played in commercials where he would dress up as a grandmother and dunk the basketball.  Placing him on the cover was huge in gaining interests in the magazine.  The magazine also featured and continues to feature in depth articles or conversations with basketball and hip hop stars.  Also included in the magazine are basketball products and accessories.  Along with the basketball products there are also hip hop clothing features.  This has helped to associate the hip hop culture basketball.  As the years progressed so did the clothing featured in the magazine.  The magazine can now be seen as a platform for popular clothing trends and styles to be displayed.  One of my favorite aspects of the magazine is the sneaker profiles they do.  They profile popular sneakers that are geared towards the hip hop culture but can also be used as basketball sneakers.  They also feature player exclusive sneakers which are custom sneakers worn by basketball stars.  But arguably the most popular and everlasting feature in the magazine are the double sided, pin up posters.  These posters feature great photos of basketball stars.  I remember waiting for the newest issue of SLAM magazine to arrive so I could tear out the posters and place them on my wall.
